In 1947, American designer George Nelson was commissioned to create a collection of clocks, leading to the iconic Nelson Clocks. Inspired by the observation that people read time through the relative position of clock hands rather than numbers, Nelson reimagined clocks as decorative interior elements rather than mere timekeeping devices. This vision resulted in the 1949 launch of 14 unique wall and table clock designs, characterized by their absence of numbers and diverse shapes, colors, and materials. Over the next 35 years, Nelson Associates expanded the collection to over 100 models, including wall, portable, and built-in clocks. Following Nelson’s passing in 1986, the Vitra Design Museum acquired his extensive archive, and in 1999, Vitra began reissuing these timeless designs, occasionally adding new interpretations.
