In 1947, American designer George Nelson was commissioned to create a collection of clocks, leading to the iconic Nelson Clocks. Nelson observed that people read time by the position of clock hands, rendering numbers unnecessary, and recognized clocks as decorative elements rather than just timekeeping tools. This insight inspired the 1949 launch of 14 unique wall and table clocks, characterized by their lack of numbers and diverse shapes, colors, and materials. Over the next 35 years, Nelson Associates designed over 100 clock models, including wall, table, and built-in clocks. After Nelson’s passing in 1986, the Vitra Design Museum acquired his extensive archive, and Vitra began reissuing the Nelson Clocks in 1999, periodically expanding the collection. These clocks, crafted from various woods and metals and powered by high-quality quartz movements, offer a stylish and functional alternative to traditional clocks. FL/Y is an essentially-styled suspension lamp. The particular transparency of the material and the sheen of the colours recreate the idea of a soap bubble, shimmering iridiscently in the light. The shade is not perfectly hemispherical, with the cut-off falling just below the level of the diameter, offering greater concentration of the light. The lamp is available in three different sizes: Fl/Y (diameter 52cm, shade depth 33cm), Small Fl/Y (diameter 38cm, shade depth 28cm) and Big Fl/Y (diameter 83cm, shade depth 55cm).
