PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

In 1947, American designer George Nelson was commissioned to create a collection of clocks, leading to the iconic Nelson Clocks. Inspired by the observation that people read time by the position of clock hands rather than numbers, and recognizing clocks as decorative elements in interiors, Nelson introduced a groundbreaking collection of 14 wall and table clocks in 1949. These clocks, devoid of numbers, showcased a remarkable diversity in shapes, colors, materials, and designs. Over the next 35 years, Nelson Associates designed over 100 clock models, including wall, table, and built-in clocks. Following Nelson's passing in 1986, his extensive archive was acquired by the Vitra Design Museum, which began reissuing the Nelson Clocks in 1999. The collection, featuring high-quality quartz movements and a variety of materials like wood and metal, continues to grow, offering timeless and versatile designs for modern interiors. A 3D file of the product is also available for download, allowing for a closer look at its design. Vitra, the Swiss family-owned company behind the reissue, is renowned for its innovative and iconic furniture, lighting, and accessories, collaborating with legendary designers to create functional, aesthetically pleasing pieces for homes, offices, and public spaces. Founded in 1950 by Willi Fehlbaum, Vitra has established itself as a global leader in design, with a commitment to quality, durability, and timeless style.

The designer Alexander Girard drew wide acclaim with his interior concept for the legendary Miller House (1953-57), for which he personally selected each individual object. The centrepiece of the house was a so-called 'conversation pit', a sunken seating area in the living room, with built-in sofas covered in fabrics by Girard and decorated with embroidered pillows made specifically for this setting. <br/><br/>Girard's famous 'double heart' motif was used and varied by the designer throughout his lifetime. It is composed of two intersecting S's that form a continuous loop of mirrored hearts. Each S represents the first letter of the pet names used by Girard and his wife &#8211; Sandro and Susie &#8211; which prompted him to name the double heart symbol '<a href="/en-me/magazine/details/sansusi">Sansusi</a>'.<br/><br/>The embroidered pillow with the 'Double Heart 2' motif was created by Alexander Girard for the Miller family in 1975 &#8211; 20 years after the completion of the Miller House.<br/>

Eames Fiberglass Armchair LAR

Eames Fiberglass Armchair LAR

vitra > Chair

The Shell Chairs by Charles and Ray Eames are among the most important designs in the history of furniture. Following their initial presentation at the 'Low Cost Furniture Design' competition organised by the Museum of Modern Art in 1948, the chairs were launched on the market in 1950 in an armchair version (A-shell) and as a simpler side chair (S-shell) &#8211; making them the first ever mass-produced chairs made of plastic. <br/><br/>With the debut of this revolutionary design, Charles and Ray Eames introduced a new furniture typology that has since spread around the globe: the multifunctional chair whose shell can be joined with a variety of different bases. Already in 1950, they presented a series of bases that enabled various sitting positions, including the low-slung LAR (Lounge Height Armchair Rod Base) with a geometric steel wire base, which quickly acquired the charming nickname 'Cat's Cradle' in reference to the children's string game. <br/><br/>The LAR seems to have been one of Charles and Ray's favourite designs: it can be spotted in numerous vintage photographs of the legendary Eames House in Pacific Palisades, both indoors and out. This also reveals how lightweight the chair is, and how easily it can be moved around.<br/><br/>Due to the organic shape of this classic armchair, the LAR is a striking solo piece, but it can also be paired with many types of sofas to create an appealing contrast. The LAR is offered as the Plastic Chair LAR with a polypropylene shell, or as the Fiberglass Chair LAR with a fibreglass shell that draws attention to the lively texture so valued by connoisseurs. The fascination of fibreglass lies in its irregular surface, whose clearly visible fibres make it appear almost like a natural material. The Fiberglass Chair LAR is not offered with full upholstery in order to show off the unique characteristics of this material to maximum effect. However, a comfortable seat cushion is optionally available.

Miniatures Tulip Chair

Miniatures Tulip Chair

vitra > Styling

The Tulip Chair is one of a series of chairs, stools, and tables developed by Eero Saarinen within a five-year period. The characteristic feature of the series is that the supporting structure has been pared to a central supporting stem &#187;like a wineglass&#171; in order to emphasise the uniformity of table and chair.<br/><br/>Eero Saarinen describes the Tulip Chair: &#187;The bases of tables and chairs in a typical furniture arrangement create an ugly, confusing, and restless world. I wanted to design a chair as an integrated whole once again. All important furniture of the past always had a holistic structure, from King Tut's chair to that of Thomas Chippendale. Today, we are parting ways with this holism with our predilection for plastic and laminated wood shells. I am looking forward to the point when the plastics industry will be capable of manufacturing the chair using just one material, the way I have designed it.&#171;

Miniatures Knotted Chair

Miniatures Knotted Chair

vitra > Styling

Knotted Chair is made of knotted netting soaked in artificial resin and simply hung out to dry. This produces a highly expressive seat shell which is as fragile, transparent and light as a hammock but is as solid as a seat should be. The use of simple knotted cords gives Knotted Chair that additional &#187;warm&#171;, personal feeling.<br/><br/>Wanders description of Knotted Chair: &#187;The design is based on three innovations. Firstly, the process of hardening a textile in such a way that it can serve as a constructional element, becoming part of the structure of a three-dimensional product. Secondly, the use of knotting techniques to create curved, solid surfaces and structures. Thirdly, the manufacture of an industrial product made of plastic without resorting to a mould, but by simply making use of gravity and artificial resin as a stiffening agent.<br/><br/>Of course these factors are decisive in determining the quality of the chair. I personally, however, I am more enthusiastic about the chair's formal appeal and the meaning its external appearance lends it. It is a chair which tells you it was made for you alone, with a great deal of love, creativity and care, a chair which thus has its own personal and individual character, a chair which shows its relationship to you by letting you see different details every time you use it.

Charles and Ray Eames received a commission to design the interiors of three lobbies in the new Time & Life Building at Rockefeller Center in New York City. In addition to outfitting these spaces, this major project encompassed the development of the comfortably upholstered Lobby Chairs and a group of stools made out of solid walnut.<br/><br/>The lathe-turned stools, which were also conceived by Ray to be used as small occasional tables, have distinctive individual profiles. The sculptural and decorative character of the stools makes the most striking impression when they are grouped together. These pieces were inspired by an African stool that stood in the living room of the Eames House, as shown in a photographic series by Monique Jacot from the year 1959.

This insight inspired the 1949 launch of 14 unique wall and table clock designs, characterized by their absence of numbers and a diverse array of shapes, colors, and materials. Over the next 35 years, Nelson Associates designed over 100 clock models, including wall, table, and built-in clocks. Following Nelson’s passing in 1986, his extensive archive of 7,400 manuscripts, plans, and photographs was acquired by the Vitra Design Museum, which began reissuing the Nelson Clocks in 1999. These clocks, crafted from various woods and metals and powered by high-quality quartz movements, remain a stylish and functional alternative to traditional timepieces. A 3D file of the product is available for download, offering a digital representation of its design. Vitra, the Swiss family-owned company behind the reissue, is renowned for its innovative furniture, lighting, and accessories, collaborating with legendary designers like George Nelson to create timeless, modern pieces that blend aesthetics with functionality.
