Description

Modern art of the 20th and 21st centuries deserves an appropriate setting, with a building and its furniture that is just as modern. Berlin architects Sauerbruch Hutton were thus faced with an exciting challenge when asked to design the Museum Brandhorst in Munich. Three different seating solutions were developed for the museum, which opened in 2009 – for the cafeteria, the foyer, the conference and lecture rooms as well as the lounge. ClassiCon developed the designs to the point of series production in close collaboration with the architects. Along with demanding expectations in terms of form and quality, the typical wear and tear that the furniture would be subjected to in the public space had also to be taken into consideration. Its durability was ensured by means of various tests.

Some of her most beautiful designs are part of the rug collection by ClassiCon. Based on a gouache by Eileen Gray from the 1920s, Faubourg is the epitome of minimalism: set against a square, natural white background, three simple black lines create an exciting dynamic. Two curved lines provide a reference to Eileen Gray's furniture designs – for example, to the iconic Adjustable Table E1027 – in which circles and curves are recurring motifs. The Bell Table is a masterpiece of traditional craftsmanship. A table base made of coloured glass and an attached metal body form a harmonious unit reminiscent of the elegant curve of a bell. In the Bell Side Table Marble, Sebastian Herkner translates the characteristic silhouette of his design into solid natural stone: five different coloured stone variants, either matt or polished, are available. The marble emphasises the sculptural character of the design, and the distinctive grain and colouring makes each table unique. With his Forma design, Christian Haas interprets the 1940s/50s archetype of a classic desk lamp in solid wood. He reduced the original shape without trivialising it and thus created an unmistakable silhouette: the asymmetry of the base and the domed shade of glued solid wood stripes, make the design appear to have grown organically. The inherent warmth and sensuousness of the naturally grown material of which Forma is made, ash or walnut wood, lends the new luminaire its homely character. An almost invisible push button in the base guarantees easy operation. The large, slightly inclined shade with a satinised diffuser panel and a dimmable warm white LED ring provides pleasant, glare-free light. Aërias Chair

Aërias surprises with formal conciseness, lightness and innovative weaving: the familiar pattern of the Vienna wickerwork is reinterpreted with a changed scale and leather as a material. Just as the look of a type font changes depending on its size, the traditional weaving used for Aërias also gains character due to the multiple enlargement of the pattern. The high sitting comfort results from the leather straps stretched on a wooden frame. Similar to the leather stretched on a drum, the result is flexing minimal surfaces absorbing the movements of the body and making sitting and leaning back especially comfortable.

Corker No. 1

ClassiCon > Accessories

Warm, grounding, stable and flexible in the ways it can be used: Corker is one of those universal talents that simply look good in any environment as an extra seat or side table. Corker is available in three sizes and plays with its nature not only in its name but also in its design: The silhouette of a wine bottle cork served as inspiration. The piece of furniture can almost be viewed as a pop art object due to its direct, simply enlarged reference to an object taken from everyday culture.

With the Pli table series French designer Victoria Wilmotte brings objects of unusual crystalline elegance and astonishing geometry to living environments. The bends and folds that gave Pli its name almost make the stainless steel base look like an oversized finely polished precious stone. The table’s oval forms of the base and tabletop establish an attractive contrast with the facets of the base, which create a fascinating play with light friction and colour reflections in the room. The Pegasus Home Desk is a small, ingeniously conceived home workplace that provides space for the digital devices that have long since become part of our everyday lives. A well-designed workplace solution is conjoined here with the elegance of a perfectly crafted piece of domestic furniture. The thick bend-leather tabletop can be rolled or folded upward as needed to access the intelligently arranged compartments below. Here there is space for a laptop, tablet PC, mobile phone, paper, charging stations, power supply or other accessories.

Matéria Long Table

The Matéria Low Board series is characterised by its unusual dimensions and aura of tranquillity. When taking a closer look, however, its nearly monochromatic appearance is revealed as an interplay of the porous travertine stone and smoothly finished wood. Matéria evokes an intuitive urge to touch the surfaces, to feel the natural textures. Originally a purely experimental design by German designer Christian Haas, it was expanded into a trio in cooperation with ClassiCon. Matéria is available in three different sizes and currently two surfaces. Individually or in combination, the handcrafted low boards rightfully take centre stage due to their materiality and reveal the sensual effect of reductionism.

Folding Screen

The high-tech look that arose in the 1980s and which is still potentially current had an ingenious predecessor. Over half a century ago, Eileen Gray anticipated the cool industrial aesthetic of modern technology with the Folding Screen and her fluorescent lighting fixture Tube Light. Her softly curved, four-leaf folding screen with its perforated metal panels will also survive the stylistic trends of future decades undamaged. Indeed, there are forms upon which no one can improve.

Aixia Chair

Aixia was one of Eileen Gray‘s personal favourites. She used this chair in all of her apartments, sometimes in the dining room, sometimes at a desk. Even in 1929, when she converted a 40 m² apartment in Paris, Rue Chateaubriand, into an atelier of brilliant aesthetic and fascinating functionality for Jean Badovici, Aixia was among the furnishings. The chair is named after the company that produced the steel tubing for Eileen Gray‘s avant-garde designs.

Pallas Table

Pallas is a table with overwhelming optical presence. It commands any room at the first glance. And at the second glance it reveals an abundance of exciting design details: kinks and notches which break up and give life to the smooth lines, the screwed joints on the underside, the tactile appeal of the powder-coated metal surface. The proportions are selected in such a way that, in contrast to many fashionably over-wide tables, people sit closer to each other. This stimulates table conversation and makes Pallas a natural centre for communication. Despite its slender proportions, it makes an immediate impression outdoors.

Double X Table

When an avant-garde steel tube design meets the classical refectory table, the result is the Double X. A large, yet elegant table, its x-shaped supports make for optimum rigidity. Eileen Gray did not want delicate luxury furniture for her house in Castellar, on the way from Menton to the Alps, but instead versatile pieces for every day use. She succeeded with Menton in one of her most ingenious constructions. Through a simple rotation of the top one has either a low or a high table as desired. Eileen Gray used Menton in the high position as a dining table, in the low position as a side table on the terrace and also as a coffee table in the guest room.

Non Conformist Armchair

It piques and provokes what one might expect of it, and yet it is inexplicably aesthetic and harmonious – a nonconformist on velvet paws. Eileen Gray commented quite pragmatically on her work with typical understatement: "An armrest was omitted in order to leave the body more freedom in movement and to allow it to bend forward or to turn to the other side unrestricted".
