Red revisited – plate

Renny Ramakers Rethinking Design

In the book ‘Renny Ramakers: Rethinking Design – Curator of Change’, author Aaron Betsky shows how Ramakers has emphasized the mix of high and low cultures, the reuse of images, the importance of wit, the necessity of user participation, the elegance of the undressed object and the possibilities of design as a catalyst for social change. It surveys the work Ramakers has done since 1980 as the author of countless articles and books on design, as the promotor of Droog, as project director and curator, and as thinker.

Chung-Tang Ho created a cabinet that changes shape during use, a solid volume that opens up when objects are stored within it. The cabinet is in fact a sculpture in the round you and your objects can participate in.

Clock inlays

Intricately shaped inlays are incorporated into chip board—transforming the material from under- to Upperlayment™. Part of the Hidden inlays series, in Clock inlays, an inexpensive department store clock is preciously packed in chip board with integrated inlays of clock part shapes. It is an unusual reversal of value: the packaging becomes more precious than the mass produced object it contains.

Chest of drawers

Chest of drawers had its première in 1991 and has since become a true Droog classic, an icon of conceptual design collected by museums such as MoMA and Museum of Art and Design in New York. A criticism on consumerism, Tejo Remy collected found drawers, gave them new enclosures and loosely bundled them into a chest. His pioneering vision was to make one’s own paradise with what one encounters, as Robinson Crusoë did on his island.

Centrepiece

A continuation on the House of textures, this series of chairs can be seen as jewellery. Intricately cut layers depict the parts of an upholstered chair, like wood and springs, and tell its life story — from becoming a brief resting place for butterflies, to a feeding ground for woodworms, and finally to its demise in a fire.

St. Petersburg chair

This chair was designed for the Café Dutch Room in St. Petersburg. An antique chair is covered with layers of fibre-glass strengthened polyester, the outermost layer silk-screened with a flowery pattern, bringing a new lease of life to old-fashioned chairs.

Rag chair

This chair is layered from the contents of 15 bags of rags. It arrives ready made but the user has the option to recycle its own discarded clothes to be included in the design. Each piece is unique; a treasure-chest of memories.

Knotted chair

This lightweight chair combines industrial techniques and handcrafting. A thread constructed of aramid and carbon fibres, is knotted into the shape of a chair and then impregnated with epoxy resin and hung in a frame to dry, leaving the final form in the hands of gravity. The Knotted chair was a result of Droog’s 1996 Dry Tech I project.

Aston "Cord" Outdoor

Aston is a family of individual pieces, including a sofa, a daybed, armchairs, footstool, chairs and stool in two heights – 101 cm and 114 cm – custom-designed to furnish homes and “public spaces” with style and elegance, allowing the conversation to continue between indoors and outdoors. The Aston “Cord” Outdoor collection comes with a pewter colour polyester-painted stainless steel frame specially treated for exterior use, as are the padded cushions, which are covered in waterproof fabric. The seat back is in a special braided 7 mm diameter polypropylene cord, available in the following colour variations: Light Gray, Dark Brown, Sand, Sunflower, Khaki Green and Rust, a perfect match for the fabrics in the Art Lifescape 02 textile collection and the shade of Alison “dark brown” outdoor. The painted stainless steel frame is finished with a special polyester paint for exterior use in Pewter colour and the seat back is in a special braided polypropylene cord, available in two colour variations: light grey and dark brown. The seats feature an exclusive Minotti Studio laser-cut geometric design. Inner padding of the cushions is in highly durable expanded polyurethane covered in water repellent fibre.

Fynn "Outdoor"

In Fynn, Scandinavian values meet Italian tradition. A contemporary design for outdoor spaces in teak wood, crafted with fine cabinet-making workmanship.  With a completely innovative approach, the fine cabinet-making process used for the manufacturing of outdoor wooden furniture is applied to a family of outdoor furnishing pieces in solid teak, combining sophisticated workmanship with an ultra-contemporary design.   Characterised by an interwoven frame that hosts soft seat and backrest cushions, Fynn has in the armrest its signature element. Elongated and slightly curved, rounded and smooth to the touch, it is completely handmade: its precise, well-defined line identifies the entire family, composed of armchair, lounge and dining little armchairs, benches, footstools, coffee tables in different sizes and a dining table. The Fynn Outdoor armchair and little armchairs feature a distinctive ultra-lightweight aesthetic with a simple structure in teak. The frame is interwoven with wicker-effect cords in Mud colour, hosting a padded seat and backrest cushion, designed as a single element. The informal rigour with which Fynn Outdoor hosts the padded element designs a comfortable seat. The bench completes the family. Its cushions sit on a frame interwoven with wicker-effect cords in Mud colour. The coffee tables also share the same line as the wooden armrest, which designs a slight curve also found in the rounded sides of the top. The central part of the coffee table is enhanced by the presence of the top in Pietra del Cardoso, creating a sophisticated combination of materials.

D.150.5 - Outdoor Collection

In collaboration with the Gio Ponti Archives and the heirs of the renowned Milanese architect Molteni&C is reconstructing one of the rare pieces of furniture Gio Ponti designed for outdoor use the D.150.5 chaise longue projects for the cruise ship Andrea Doria in 1952.
