MATRIX MEDIUM

Both table lamp and art object, MATRIX is the result of the essential design of the duo Oskar Peet and Sophie Mensen, established designers of the latest generation and founders of the Eindhoven-based Studio OS Δ OOS. When referring to the term matrix, we generally think of a square matrix commonly used in mathematics, i.e. a combination of rows and columns. A third dimension is added by introducing a circle that surrounds the matrix like a ring. The design object becomes a lamp thanks to a light globe, positioned internally and centrally to the matrix, which emits a soft and diffused light in all directions. The grid structure plays with the simple and pure shape of the illuminated sphere. The components of Matrix create transparencies and cast unusual geometric shadows on the surrounding surfaces when viewed from different perspectives. The Matrix project began as a system to allow for endless configurations. The base concept is derived from architectural constructions and solutions for multi-purpose situations, i.e. from the concept of form meeting function.

The seats and the backrest are made up of extremely comfortable cushions covered in fabric or leather. The outer shell of the armchair is instead covered in leather. Two-or three-seater linear upholstered sofa and compositions with footrest at the right and left ends, and supple, fluent shapes. The large, enveloping back has an arched, convex profile and the back-support cushion rests against it; the seat, which is gently curved, expands onto ample cushions. A single end, either left or right, completes the sofa: the lengthened seat is contained by a deep, hollowed back, almost like a deckchair. The paw-like legs lift it up off the ground and make the whole of the fitted units light: the seat, the back and the arms. the supporting structure is in steel, the padding is polyurethane and the covers are made of fabrics, leather and microfibre from our collection.

The graphic simplicity comes from the design brief asking for an archetypal product based on the golden ratio. The different elements have 2 sections of fabric, creating a “bottom line” which is intended to bond the different parts together, yet allowing for the upper part to be selected in different colours or fabrics creating a varied interior. Courage have a base frame of metal, different parts for different elements. There is no visible fittings or damage when Courage is built together. ADD ELECTRICS To support connected users on the move Courage can be specified with integrated electrical power outlets neatly fitted into the seat and easily accessible. PAIR WITH ORBIT The Orbit swivelling table perfectly compliments Courage’s form and function and has been designed to be natively mounted to Courage’s seat modules.
