REGINA

Inspired by the game of chess with their sinuous shapes, Re and Regina are the key characters of the chessboard. Their profiles stand out clearly in the white light diffused by opalescent glass. Real individuals, they play in pairs alternating spheres, cylinders and rings of light. Vertical the King (Re), horizontal the Queen (Regina). They can be placed next to each other or in different spots in the same room, be used as floor or table lamps, on a coffee table or a desk, both Re and Regina have the presence to create a context. The dimmer allows to modulate the light making it a surreal element with different degrees of intensity: an element of representation that releases energy in space when the light is bright, abstract and restful when the light is soft and low. Glass sculptures during the day in environments illuminated by natural light. Re and Regina are inspired by the history of art, from Cosmè Tura to the Flemish interiors of Jan Van Eych to the conceptual imagery of Marcel Duchamp who plays chess as a lifestyle. Re and Regina are Cartesian axes of a universe that crosses ages and cultures. In 2020 FontanaArte reintroduces these glass lamps as a sign of the expressive wealth contained in the great repertory of ideas that is the FontanaArte catalogue and, most importantly an homage to the talent of an artist who had a gift for calibrating the formal tension of a utilitarian object on a quest for unity among the arts.

This extremely elegant table lamp was designed by Max Ingrand in 1955, during the period when this French maestro was artistic director at FontanaArte. Chromed brass joints hold together five tubes made of transparent borosilicate glass that form a series of intersections supporting the lamp.

METAFORA

Metafora was born in the flourishing creative climate of the early ‘80s, when Gae Aulenti took on the role of artistic director for FontanaArte and decided to bring glass back to the forefront of the company’s production. On Aulenti’s invitation, Umberto Riva designed a precious table lamp consisting of a conical shade in layered opal glass supported by a transparent glass base that hides the metal frame, all interlocking. A highly decorative object, produced with traditional techniques like glass blowing and other examples of artisanal know-how, reproposed today to a clientele ever more attentive to originality of design and its timeless expressions.

FontanaArte calls Stefano Boeri Architetti and launches "lasospesa", the new table lamp. For one of the most important Milanese architects in the world, whose Bosco Verticale is one of the most representative and iconic projects of our time, trying a lamp was an interesting change of scale. Like FontanaArte: historic and contemporary Milan, elegant entrances and new buildings, fashion and major art exhibitions. Like FontanaArte's art: it finds form in an object that does not preclude function and from which a light comes to life. lasospesa is in fact a symmetrical table lamp, born from the elementary principle of the incorporation of two cylinders: a cylinder of primary light suspended in a cylinder of diffused light. "A non-lamp with numerous uses and iridescent luminosity, very simple and classic, lasospesa seems to have always been there, where you placed it" says Stefano Boeri.

When referring to the term matrix, we generally think of a square matrix commonly used in mathematics, i.e. a combination of rows and columns. A third dimension is added by introducing a circle that surrounds the matrix like a ring. The design object becomes a lamp thanks to a light globe, positioned internally and centrally to the matrix, which emits a soft and diffused light in all directions. The grid structure plays with the simple and pure shape of the illuminated sphere. The components of Matrix create transparencies and cast unusual geometric shadows on the surrounding surfaces when viewed from different perspectives. The Matrix project began as a system to allow for endless configurations. The base concept is derived from architectural constructions and solutions for multi-purpose situations, i.e. from the concept of form meeting function.

Refined and articulated volumes come together to bring to life a system expressed in three variants capable of meeting different areas of taste and as many ways of experiencing the domestic and Hospitality spaces.  Dylan, in the version with a suspended base raised 13,5 cm from the ground by thin extruded aluminium blades in Bronze or Pewter colour, has a particularly airy and modern feel, matching a more contemporary style, at the same time shining a spotlight on its couturier details. A project that offers a perfect balance between design essentiality and density of details combining light aesthetics with high quality comfort. The Dylan Small version takes up the same aesthetic, but with a more compact depth, specifically designed to bring the same taste of high tailoring into smaller domestic environments or more calibrated Hospitality spaces. Dylan Low, finally, sits only 7,5 cm off the ground and expresses a more classic and traditional personality, in line with a formal aesthetic taste.  The fil rouge linking the three different types is represented by the seat and backrest cushions, punctuated by soft, couture-inspired stitching, which make this system a timeless classic, albeit with novel and contemporary flexibility and modularity.  The rigorous shapes of the Dylan modular seating system, however, go beyond the stitching of the cushions, turning into volumes in which the geometries become sinuous and enveloping, thanks to the soft curves of the backrest and armrest that create a fulfilling sense of cosiness. The complex and sophisticated manufacturing construction also animates the suspended base of Dylan, which uses the same tailoring technique developed for the Connery modular seating system: the leather or fabric strips are sewn together by means of webbing and punctuated by stitching that gives rhythm to the seat cushioning and adds a further couture note to the design of the project. Every detail of Dylan combines the tailoring of the upholstery with the multifaceted vision of a rational architecture that passes from the space to the furniture, balancing and perfectly integrating it with the contemporary way of interpreting and experiencing living spaces.

Albert & Ile

Drawn from the Minotti Archive, the designs of Albert&Ile, a family of seats and a coffee table characterized by their vintage flavour, are thought as a tribute to Alberto, the founder of the company who died in 1991, and Ileana, his wife, currently Honorary President of the company.  The family shares the same design of the slender and retro-styled leg but the elements differ in terms of general shape.  Albert maintains the 1900-inspired armrests and classic lines reinterpreted by the aesthetics of the Fifties. A decorative front element runs along its entire length and draws the armrest: made of solid wood, it is first covered and then fixed with nails to the main structure.  Ile, instead, is closer to the aesthetics of the Sixties. Inspired by classic armchairs and characterised by the hollow shape of its back, it reframes these elements according to the versatility of the forms of the Sixties.  A mohair wool velvet, in vibrant colours with shimmering reflections - from Mink to Cobalt, from Blue Ocean to Titanium - is the upholstery that best enhances the two pieces. Albert&Ile have been edited on the occasion of the company's 70th anniversary, testifying the Minotti's DNA which, thanks to its founder, still transmits the importance of manual skills and the know-how of a sophisticated sartorial tailoring.
