C’était à Londres, voilà quelques années, Frédéric Winkler avec DCW éditions et le designer franco-libanais Charles Kalpakian. Chacun son stand, face-à-face. Pas du genre chiens de faïence, voici les deux engagés par camaraderie et affinités électives. Comme une envie de travailler ensemble, mais surtout, pour chacun, de se raconter. Enfance, éducation, jeux et rêves. Pour Charles Kalpakian, c’était le Liban et cette liberté paradoxale dès la sortie d’école, de courir et jouer dans une ville en morceaux. Ce sont ses souvenirs, extirpés d’un urbex à la fois exultant et traumatisant qu’il a métabolisés pour DCW éditions, challengé par un Frédéric Winkler et son obsession des angles de corridors aveugles. Dessine-moi une lumière… Fiat lux avec Soul, série de six lampes en plâtre à poser en appliques, à scruter comme on pénètre au crépuscule dans une ruelle obscure soudain percée d’un rai de lumière irréel. Éléments narratifs d’une biographie mémorielle, ces paysages de curiosité donnent au designer Charles Kalpakian, talent-star de la galerie parisienne BSL, rompu au travail du métal, de la pierre, du bronze, de la laque ou du velours, l’occasion de battre plâtre en son atelier. De ce matériau vernaculaire et humble, il a moulé six figures assimilables à des masques étrusques. Au blanc pur de la matière matricielle, il a glissé ou non, un aplat de feuille d’or afin de sublimer le rétro-éclairage de chaque lampe. Exercice biographique confessé, Soul donne à contempler chaque modèle par le regard d’un petit personnage en métal, assis ou debout, que DCW éditions invite à manipuler comme un auto-portrait de Kalpakian… La collection Soul comprend 5 lumières en plâtre blanc avec ou sans décor à la feuille d’or ainsi qu’une applique d’angle pour éclairage de couloir. Pesant de 3,7 à 5,2 kilos, les Soul sont équipées d’un éclairage par LED intégré.
