Karuselli Lounge Chair

Distinct in style and exceptionally comfortable, the Karuselli Lounge Chair exemplifies designer Yrjö Kukkapuro’s interest in achieving ultimate comfort through a union of function, ergonomics, and organic form. Kukkapuro spent several years sculpting the chair, wrapping himself in chicken wire and making a plaster cast of his body in a lounging posture in order to achieve the perfect dimensions. As soon as the chair’s iconic form was realised in 1964, it became an immediate international success. The chair prompted Gio Ponti to choose Karuselli for the cover of Domus in 1966 and inspired Sir Terence Conran to proclaim it his favourite chair.

Armchair 400 “Tank“

As voluminous as it is comfortable, Armchair 400 was created by Alvar Aalto in 1936 for an exhibition at the Milan Triennale, where it was promptly awarded a prize. The chair owes its nickname “Tank” to its distinctive wide and sturdy armrests made of form-bent birch lamella and to its robust upholstery. The springy cantilevered frame offers a flexible, comfortable seat. A favourite since the 1930s, Armchair 400 remains effortlessly modern and can be upholstered in any material.

Floor Light A808

In 1946, designer Ilmari Tapiovaara and his wife Annikki won the commission to design the interior of the Domus Academica student housing complex in Helsinki. Confident that functionalism would promote social equality, Tapiovaara created the Domus Lounge Chair as part of a series of furniture for the students. Over time, the Domus Lounge Chair’s popularity has extended far beyond the location for which it was first intended.

Casting golden reflections, the perforated rim of Pendant Light A330S creates a memorable halo effect and prevents glare. Made from a single piece of brass or steel, the elegant “Golden Bell” was created by Aino and Alvar Aalto for the interior of The Savoy Restaurant, Helsinki in 1937 and went on to be shown in the Finnish Pavilion of the Paris World Expo the same year. Tea Trolley 901

The tea trolley was inspired by British tea culture, which Aino and Alvar Aalto had become acquainted with though their many travels, as well as by the Japanese woodwork and architecture they admired. With a frame composed of two birch lamella loops, Tea Trolley 901 features two shelves and a solid birch handle. Twin wheels, in combination with the lightweight quality of birch, mean the trolley can be easily maneuvered and parked at will. Over the years, numerous variations of the Tea Trolley have been produced. Dutch designer and colour expert Hella Jongerius delved into Artek’s archives to offer her own take on one of Alvar Aalto’s most cherished products. Her subtle interventions resulted in a dark version of the trolley, which plays with the shifting light on the product’s upper and lower trays.
