Collection Il Tornitore Matto
Dimensions W 16.7 x D 16.7 x H 24.9 cm

Description

Inspired by the trumpet-blowing White Rabbit that Alice follows down the rabbit hole to Wonderland, Michael Anastassiades's Trumpet vases are produced the same way as the bell of this ancient wind instrument. He chose for one of the most traditional techniques of hand-turned metal, whereby a disk of metal, usually brass, is formed. Its diameter is then progressively narrowed to the size of a finger, which allows the piece to be welded to the rest of the object's body. This process is used to build most wind instruments. In Anastassiades's poetic eye, it gives shape to flower vases whose convex underside curves up into the shaft as an ulterior connection to the shape of the object by which it was inspired. Available in two versions, brass and silver-plated brass.

Rocc is a home fragrance project inspired by the mineral world. The fragrances are available in the form of alcohol-based solutions, poured into an elegantly minimalist stainless steel container. Michael Anastassiades investigated the possibility to associate the sense of smell to elements that are usually admired only with the senses of sight and touch. The creation of the fragrances was carried out with the consultancy of one of the most important perfume houses in Grasse.

Tronchetto

Tronchetto - Styling by Alessi

Alessi > Styling

This object is open to multiple interpretations depending on the eye that observes it. When completed by a flower, the Tronchetto vase becomes a cross, "one of those ambient signs that independently of religious questions are able to change the significance of a space all on their own," says Andrea Branzi. Such entrenched anthropological symbols communicate to us in an ancestral language that they are mysterious entities, objects with a spirit, just like this simple and enigmatic vase.

The Dervisci tumblers by Michele De Lucchi were inspired by the spinning movement of the turning-lathe used to model sheet metal on a die, progressively shaping the object's volume. De Lucchi associates the rotating machine with the dance of whirling dervishes, who reach a state of trance by reciting prayers while continuously spinning round and round, a symbol of planets orbiting. The sculptural, dynamic design of the three Dervisci tumblers is enhanced by the different finishes of the metal surface: polished steel; steel with copper PVD coating; steel with brass PVD coating; and steel with satined gunmetal PVD coating.

Conca

Conca - Styling by Alessi

Giulio Iacchetti did not only co-create this first instalment of Il Tornitore Matto with Alberto Alessi, but also participated in the project as a designer, offering us the reinterpretation of an ancient type of jug called a conca, common in central and southern Italy. It is a capacious vessel used to contain and transport water. Equipped with two handles, the conca was either balanced atop the head to carry it, or left at the entrance of the home, allowing people to drink as soon as they arrived. Iacchetti maintained the traditional shape of two opposed and stacked cones, and worked on the design of the characteristic handles to create a single curved line that traces out the object's entire profile.

The anodized aluminium comes in three colours – orange, green and sky blue – that emphasise the object's shape and give it a strong scenic presence.

Coppa Camuna

Coppa Camuna - Accessories by Alessi

Alessi > Accessories

The Coppa Camuna stems from the designer’s fascination with the age-old tradition of ironworking rooted in the Valle Camonica, located in the Central Alps between the provinces of Brescia and Bergamo. In Bienno, the ‘village of a thousand forges’, where this archaic craftsman’s knowledge is preserved, Iacchetti found those who could help him develop the project for an iron container. Thus was born a dialogue between the designer and the craftsmen of Bienno, a joint journey that gradually led from an initial design to an initial shape and from this – in a sort of evolution of the species – to the final artefact. The Coppa Camuna has an apparently brutalist form that recalls that of a war helmet but turned upside down towards the sky, transformed into a container ready to hold a flower or to become an instrument of offering. An extraordinary subversion of meaning, in other words, that converts a symbol of war into an artefact of offering. The production process in turn contains a passage of meaning, from strength to offering: the iron, turned with powerful energy and then passed through fire for the final treatment with wax, becomes a poetic object to contain, as its designer says, “the things of life”.

Composed of a basket, a centrepiece and an "unprecedented object", his triad of objects is a powerful encapsulation of the experiments he entertained with a master turner at his side. The three containers are first made on a lathe, then compressed to obtain the final shape. The graceful Kuru Kuru is composed of a tray, carafe and cup, three elements that hark back to their archetypes. By reinterpreting simple shapes of universal tradition, Naoto Fukasawa creates new objects of daily use. Kuru Kuru is a Japanese term for the turning-lathe, the main technique used to make the three objects. The humble forms breathe with elegance and kindness, while quiet power transpires from their continuous, flowing outline. The three objects are available separately, in two versions: stainless steel and stainless steel with copper PVD coating.
