KESA NEELA - Fabric armchair with armrests by Phantom Hands
Description
KeSa Neela is a fabric armchair with armrests whose wood finish is called Burnt Umber-Driftwood. Burnt Umber-Driftwood finish is achieved by applying a walnut and black stain mixture on deeply burnished wood, followed by a coat of sealer and brushing with steel wool.Padmaja Krishnan is a textile designer based in Mumbai. The KeSa collection by Padmaja continues the exploration of handmade Indian textiles for upholstery and the use of up-cycled material in the products Phantom Hands produces. The collection will launch with Upholstered Chairs and extend to seating cushions and other products.KeSa refers to single-layer garments stitched together by Buddhist monks from rags and discarded clothing. It is derived from the Sanskrit word Kāsāya which referred to the dark brown or saffron colour of these garments. By redefining the useless and discarded, choosing techniques that are slow and not fully controllable and finding effects in defects, Padmaja endeavours to break the tedium of mass manufacture and create textiles that can be labeled classic and modern at the same time. It follows the native tradition of respecting things instead of wanting more. Inspired by the traditional KeSa, these textiles are created through an intense process of collecting discarded fabric scraps, arranging them with care, sewing them one piece at a time by hand, and then by machine. These textiles are an ode to the transience of things, the flowing of time and a sort of rustic beauty - that imperfect and aged objects are often the most beautiful.Products in the KeSa Collection are available in a set of fabric 'colourways', designed and produced by textile designer Padmaja Krishnan. The fabric used for the KeSa collection is an up-cycled 'Patchwork Textile' - created through an intense process of collecting discarded fabric scraps, arranging them with care into specific patterns and sewing them one piece at a time by hand, and then by machine. The process of stitching and making enough fabric for a single seating takes several weeks of work and is done entirely by women artisans in Padmaja's workshop in Mumbai. Each product of this collection is truly unique, even though they belong to a specific 'colourway' created by Padmaja. A specially designed cushion is optionally available for each seating model in the KeSa Collection. The cushion is designed keeping in mind the ergonomics and is called the 'Manju' cushion. Fabric colourways in the KeSa collection are complimented by a specific hand-stained, developed by Phantom Hands.
