Ceramics is traditionally regarded as delicate, yet with Crockery Chairs, designer Max Lamb and 1882 Ltd. challenge this assumption, treating material pressure points as opportunities for innovation rather than constraints. The process begins with Lamb hand-sculpting each form in plaster, which then serves as the master model for 1882 Ltd.’s potters to reproduce through traditional slip-casting. This meticulous, time-intensive method demands weeks of controlled drying, expert handling, and carefully calibrated firing, each stage determining the final form and colour, and leaving little room for error. Crockery is both a feat of innovative production and an evolution of a long-standing creative dialogue, showcasing 1882 Ltd.’s technical mastery and Lamb’s material experimentation as they push ceramics beyond its presumed limits.

1882 Ltd. have collaborated with ceramicist, Frances Palmer, to create a collection which is designed for everyday use. The white creamware dishes are light and simple but sturdy, with a transparent finish as airy as clouds. Frances threw each shape for the Cirrus collection to create the prototypes for the moulds. In Stoke-on-Trent the forms were then hand-cast and finished in order to maintain the trace of Frances’ throwing lines. Each piece goes through at least 10 steps of production.

Acclaimed conceptual artist Bruce McLean created a vast body of work titled Garden Ware that was on exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London 2017. The collection included one-off earthenware creations by McLean, including vases, bowls, platters. Stemming from the series of 50 Platters, McLean selected 4 artworks that have been reproduced as silk screen decals and now adorn dinner plates.
