Ceramics is traditionally regarded as delicate, yet with Crockery Chairs, designer Max Lamb and 1882 Ltd. challenge this assumption, treating material pressure points as opportunities for innovation rather than constraints. The process begins with Lamb hand-sculpting each form in plaster, which then serves as the master model for 1882 Ltd.’s potters to reproduce through traditional slip-casting. This meticulous, time-intensive method demands weeks of controlled drying, expert handling, and carefully calibrated firing, each stage determining the final form and colour, and leaving little room for error. Crockery is both a feat of innovative production and an evolution of a long-standing creative dialogue, showcasing 1882 Ltd.’s technical mastery and Lamb’s material experimentation as they push ceramics beyond its presumed limits.

1882 Ltd. have collaborated with ceramicist, Frances Palmer, to create a collection which is designed for everyday use. The white creamware dishes are light and simple but sturdy, with a transparent finish as airy as clouds. Frances threw each shape for the Cirrus collection to create the prototypes for the moulds. In Stoke-on-Trent the forms were then hand-cast and finished in order to maintain the trace of Frances’ throwing lines. Each piece goes through at least 10 steps of production.

Large Deep Bowl

1882 Ltd > Styling

A collection of fine bone china tableware slip-cast from plaster models carved by hand, with glazed interior for functionality and raw exterior reflecting the modest surface texture of the plaster original. The process of slip-casting begins with the creation of a three-dimensional model of the design known as a master by a professional model-maker, from which the production mould is cast. Crockery bypasses this process by placing the responsibility of both designer and model-maker in the hands of Max Lamb. Using the tools of a stone mason Max chips and carves a solid block of plaster to make a series of tableware, the design of each formed quite simply out of their own making.

Multidisciplinary ‘anti-digital’ artist-maker Leah Jensen has brought a punk aesthetic to her spiky Prick bowl and vase with 1882 Ltd. A departure from her studio work, Prick has a forceful presence and a direction Jensen has been wanting to explore for some time. While drawing inspiration from the look and feel of the palaeolithic inspired pottery her mother and aunt made as a hobby when she was a child, Jensen has brought to these new pieces her love for all things punk. A feat of engineering in themselves, with a complex geometrical structure of the spikes, Prick has been left unglazed to maintain the crispness of detail and the depth of colour.
