This gave rise to a tool with “trestle-like substructures”. A highly functional item that adheres fully to the tradition of modernism and brings its functions clearly to the fore. Working while standing is becoming more and more popular “because it most closely corresponds to the fleetingness and speed that work involves,” says Fischer. The change becomes the actual constant. Curling up at home certainly does not mean cutting yourself off from the outside world. On the contrary, the latest member of the Mell family is a furniture invitation to a cosy rendezvous with friends, family or colleagues. With the emphasis on ‘cosy’. On the good old kitchen bench, the chest-with-armrest model, you didn’t know which side of your bottom you should shift your weight to after sitting down for just a short time. By comparison, the separate seat cushions and high back of this youngster designed by Jehs + Laub are so softly upholstered that they allow you to think, talk, eat, play or work endlessly ‘around the corner’. And it does not necessarily have to be in the kitchen either. The elegant metal frame cuts a good figure in any room.

Flint

When it comes to snugness, this delicate occasional easy chair is like the most beautiful of flowers. Its body unfolds like a calyx and is made from one single piece. How is that achieved? Imagine it as a sculpture: ‘Simply cut out all that is super­fluous’, Jehs + Laub, the designers of the Flint seating furniture, say lightly. In fact, what they have created with their design is the square of the circle: a circular base — on a rotating plate — that rises up to the rounded square seat surface and then flows to the high backrest. Craftsmanship that is also so comfortable that it would easily knock you off your stool — if it weren’t so stable.

Jalis

Cushions are archetypal pieces of seating furniture, especially in Arab countries. With Jalis, they are raised to a European seating level and transformed into chairs. What looks like a cushion with a kink in it is in fact a complexly upholstered, stably built item of seating furniture relative of the eponymous Orient-inspired upholstered Jalis sofa. A pleasing contrast is provided by the seemingly delicate base construction.

Roc

‘Come into my arms,’ this chair seems to say, with its gently curved side rests reaching out invitingly to the observer. And you feel a sense of security as you settle down into it. This is due, on the one hand, to the generous seat surface with its softly cambered seat cushion and high back at an angle that brings the spine into the perfect upright position. On the other hand, designer Uwe Fischer has provided the upholstery furniture with a compact base which provides firm support on a swivel plate. Surprisingly, however, Roc is so light that it can be moved around easily in the room — to the seating group, to the reading lamp, to the window or even just to see its pretty rear view. And while we’re at it: Read the word Roc backwards!

Bond

Bond is the name given to the table series created by the design duo Aust & Amelung, because it joins everything. It features ex­treme­ly mobile, rollable and height-adjustable laptop tables, trolleys, side tables, as well as a serving cart with a leather insert and various recesses for work utensils and a bottle plate. “Our goal was to create highly flexible furniture,” say Miriam Aust and Sebastian Amelung. “Each part of the family performs its own function and can be used like a tool.” Even the side tables, with their offset, slightly flared legs, seem to be on the go. Interestingly, handcarts were among the initial inspirations. What has remained is the curved handle which says to its users: Let’s do it!

The artist expresses this through paintings which, although complex in structure, are joyous and sensual, with bright colours made, like those of the great masters of the past, from choice powdered ingredients. A painter with a technique rich in traditional skills, Guerzoni offers a version of modernity involving an intense fundamental relationship with his images and with space. In fact, the dialectic between painting and space, form and architecture, time and memory seems to be essential to his art. As his works specifically created for CEDIT clearly express, his creations achieve a perfect balance between the spatial dimension and intensely lyrical use of colour, which here becomes a soft, liquid form of matter, wandering across the surface of a dazzling lime-plaster white. White, metaphor for the clear light of day, as it was in the large, complex canvases exhibited in his personal exhibition at the 1990 Venice Biennale, is the background for forms of colour which renew the pleasure to be had from painting and the memory of an image glimpsed on the vast expanse of the surface. In the more recent works, these voluptuous shades are transformed into subtle shadows of colour that delicately caress the surface.</p> <p> </p> <p> All it takes is one wall, the only surviving wall of what was once a house, on which time has recorded its own, unavoidable passing, leaving traces of colour that is still vibrant, although faded in places, to allow the memory of the image to transpire, fragile and uncertain, in the physicality of the surface, to bear tangible witness to the existence of history, a mysterious visual memory, the extension into the present of the life of things. A memory of the past on a contemporary wall. The idea of memory is central to Franco Guerzoni's poetics: private, secret memory and the collective memory of the past. Fragmentary and indecipherable, perceived by the artist with the aid of what is left of the images, the fragment. A relic of a totality which can no longer be reconstructed but only imagined in poetic terms, the fragment, a fraction of an image conserved by time, guides the artist's fantastic archaeological journey in search of the world's memory. However, this journey takes him in the opposite direction to the archaeologist, for whom the fragment - fundamental because it reveals a trace of the past is the starting-point for an attempt to reconstruct history. For Guerzoni, the fragment is the endpoint of his work, the goal for which he strives in his investigation of the surface, as he digs deep down, leafing through the deposits of time and memory.</p> <p> </p> <p>Like the large pages of a book traced with fragile sketches, embryonic forms whose meaning has been lost in time, leaving only fleeting traces, uncertain, ambiguous, mysterious morphologies. And the artist is fully aware of this. Guerzoni describes his art as a "gamble": a gamble that is a critical test, an act of daring, dangerous and risky. This is the challenge he sets himself. It is a challenge he easily overcomes, expressing himself on these large walls with a rediscovered pleasure in painting, no longer restrained and apparently absorbed by the dense, uneven coloured surface but set free and almost luxuriously accentuated.
