The subversion of striped fabrication has been a recurring theme in the collections of Vivienne Westwood from the early years. The painted stripe was seen in collections from the 1980s, often in the background or overprinted in designs seen during the punk era. Its irregular octagons appear as corner vignettes within the Queen's Drawing Room at Hampton Court Palace, the decoration of which was commissioned by Queen Anne as a grand statement of her royal majesty and imperial power.
