By 1951 Henry Francis du Pont had transformed his home into Winterthur Museum. At the same time, he began to build a world-class library, one that today contains more than 500,000 resources related to the decorative arts. Carefully preserved in the library’s rare book collection is a volume entitled Fashionable Furniture: A Collection of Three Hundred and Fifty Original Designs Representing Cabinetwork, Upholstery, and Decoration, published in London in 1881. Hickory Chair artists were inspired by the illustration of a chair with Asian influence. Coupled with the design of an early 19th-century New England chair with curved arm supports, the result is an elegant, modern dining arm and side chair.

Selected from Albert Sack’s extensive archives of the finest American antiques in the world, the Albert Sofa and companion Albert Chair pay tribute to the late Mr. Sack’s expert eye for classic forms that are as relevant today as they were when they originated. Adapted from an American Federal period (1785-1820) sofa with a tight seat, gracefully curved top rail, and slender tapered posts with intricate Bellflower inlay, this modern interpretation features a single row of buttons across the length of the tight back, slightly stepped back and gently flared rolled arms and clean tapered posts. Standard with a Spring-Down cushion and button-back standard. The Albert Chair features most of the same attributes as the Albert Sofa but with a slightly shorter barrel-shaped back. Comback is a chair featuring a backrest consisting of seven "teeth" which spread out towards the lumbar region where they meet a reinforced hexagonal rim with slim shafts radiating down to join the seat.
