One of the more popular chair styles of the era was the "Klismos" chair, copied from images found on vases recovered from Herculaneum and Pompeii. A circa 1820 Philadelphia example described as a Klismos side chair with a tablet top is reimagined in this modern dining chair. The style and scale make them useful and livable, while the clean lines and fine hand-carved geometric detailing make a dramatic statement. Standard with NP-08 Premium Old Brass nail head trim, no spacing, and standard with Hickory Chair provided grosgrain ribbon beneath the nails (option to send COT grosgrain ribbon for upcharge). Petite Nails are the only size nail that will work on this frame. Option for no nails available, must request on order, there is no upcharge to remove nails.

By 1951 Henry Francis du Pont had transformed his home into Winterthur Museum. At the same time, he began to build a world-class library, one that today contains more than 500,000 resources related to the decorative arts. Carefully preserved in the library’s rare book collection is a volume entitled Fashionable Furniture: A Collection of Three Hundred and Fifty Original Designs Representing Cabinetwork, Upholstery, and Decoration, published in London in 1881. Hickory Chair artists were inspired by the illustration of a chair with Asian influence. Coupled with the design of an early 19th-century New England chair with curved arm supports, the result is an elegant, modern dining arm and side chair.

At the same time, he began to build a world-class library, one that today contains more than 500,000 resources related to the decorative arts. Carefully preserved in the library’s rare book collection is a volume entitled Fashionable Furniture: A Collection of Three Hundred and Fifty Original Designs Representing Cabinetwork, Upholstery, and Decoration, published in London in 1881. Hickory Chair artists were inspired by the illustration of a chair with Asian influence. Coupled with the design of an early 19th-century New England chair with curved arm supports, the result is an elegant, modern dining arm and side chair.

With the opening of Winterthur Museum in 1951, Henry Francis du Pont and his family moved to a Regency-style villa built just across the lawn. He decorated his new house with English, French, and Italian antiques acquired early in his career as a collector. Many of those furnishings had filled the du Pont's Park Avenue apartment for the previous thirty years. One of their friends described the Park Avenue ambience as very "swagger," or elegant. In 1994, Christie's auction house in New York sold this collection, raising several million dollars for Winterthur's acquisitions fund. The Ravenel Accent Chair is an updated version of his original cane-back tub chair.
