Snowgems wall design (a+b) Annalisa Dominoni, Benedetto Quaquaro Snowgems is a wall-mounted sound-absorbing system, composed of panels in shapes and colours reminiscent of precious gems; made with Snowsound technology. The panels are held in a frame of galvanized tubular steel, which is mounted on two chromed metal plates that are anchored to the wall. The panels can rotate on their own axis, and thus lend themselves to multiple different configurations. “The design of these units is inspired by the idea of a thread of differently shaped and colored precious gems strung together to form a necklace or pendant earrings”. Snowgems is a scalable modular system based on units that add both formality and softness to a space and significantly enhance its acoustic and aesthetic quality. The shapes, which are underpinned by stainless steel clips, are reminiscent of undulating sand dunes and not only evoke a sense of sinuous movement but also, thanks to the distinctive materiality of the fabric, seem to allude to the myriad grains of sand. The sound absorbing system is anchored to the wall by means of a sturdy bracket of epoxy-coated steel. Two steel stiffening tubes are inserted in the upper and lower part of the panel where they are held in place by special chromed screws. The Green Table depicts the simplest concept of a table: two legs and a surface. The legs are an elongation of the line created by the tabletop. The tabletop and the base of the legs have the same width, making them equally important to the design.Everlastingness. Bakker adds ‘everlastingness’ to the product by applying ‘Urushi’. A traditional Japanese lacquer made of tree sap. The varnish is naturally extracted from the Urushi tree. Urushi is applied for 30 or more layers of varnish and each layer must be allowed to dry in a warm, dust-free, humid environment. Lacquer applied too thickly or unevenly, or allowed to dry too quickly or slowly can ruin a piece. Each layer is polished by hand, a process that creates tiny, almost imperceptible variations in shade and colour and gives the surface its sense of depth and life. The natural one-component varnish becomes harder and harder over time. Keeping the core of the product intact for decades. Today there are 9000-year-old objects - still well preserved with Urushi. The technique demands slowness, awareness, time and attention. The Urushi series is Bakker’s peaceful protest against overspending. Conservation versus consumerism.
