She was the daughter of an Indian father and an American mother. Under the codename Madeleine, she was sent from the UK into occupied France to aid the French Resistance. In 1926, when Blanchet was widowed at the age of thirty-five, she packed her five young children into a twenty-five-foot boat and they cruised the ragged, wild, perforated coastline of British Columbia for fifteen consecutive summers.
