Karst is a singular landscape, sculpted by water over thousands of years. As acidic rain seeps through soluble stone – like the Dolomites’ ancient bedrock – it dissolves matter along natural fractures, carving a hidden world beneath the surface: sinkholes, disappearing streams, underground rivers, and vast cave systems shaped by turbulent flow. In this relentless dance of erosion, water becomes both creator and destroyer, always moving, always shaping. alcarol has retrieved fragments of karst stone, partially cloaked in native mosses and lichens, their organic skin preserved in a crystal-clear resin evoking the very water that once crossed and hollowed them. Now, this once-fluid presence is frozen, not lost, but stilled. The Floating Karst Bookends are iconic objects: fragments of ancient terrain, shaped by geologic time and held in a suspended instant. Where water once flowed to erase, it now stands still to support, grounding knowledge, anchoring stories, and turning erosion into permanence.

Three million years ago, the Chianti hills overlooked a vast inland sea. In that ancient basin, thermal waters carried sediments through time — layer after layer — settling, shifting, and sculpting the land. As the sea slowly withdrew, it left behind a territory etched by water and wind: a stratified memory of beaches, lagoons, and shallow depths. From this landscape of transformation comes Rapolano Travertine, stone born of warm mineral-rich springs, used since the time of the Etruscans and Romans. In collaboration with Vaselli, alcarol salvaged fragments of this eroded stone, their natural cavities filled with transparent resin, a still echo of the thermal waters that once flowed through them. In this state of suspended clarity, the stone seems to float above time. The Rapolano Low Table is more than a functional surface: it’s a miniature landscape, a geological memory made visible. A fragment of territory shaped by ancient flows, now still, now quiet — where the turbulence of millennia has been paused, preserved, and made eternal.
